In Photoshop, a selection is how you tell the program exactly where to work. Master selections and you can do anything.
POINT.
SELECT.
CHANGE.
๐ฏEverything inside the selection is active territory. Everything outside is completely protected.
Core Concept
What Is a Selection?
๐
Inside the Selection
Every tool, filter, and adjustment applies here. Marching ants โ the animated dashed line โ mark the boundary of your active selection.
โ
๐ก
Outside Is Protected
Nothing changes outside the selection boundary โ no matter what tool you use. Deselect with Cmd/Ctrl+D to work on the whole layer again.
๐กSelections are tool-agnostic. Any selection works with any tool โ brushes, Curves, Hue/Saturation, even filters.
Selection Tool ยท M
Marquee Tools
โญ
Rectangular Marquee
Drag to draw straight-edged rectangular selections. Hold Shift while dragging to lock to a perfect square. Best for UI elements, windows, and geometric regions.
โญ
Elliptical Marquee
Drag to draw oval or circular selections. Hold Shift to constrain to a perfect circle. Draw from center by holding Alt/Option. Great for faces and round objects.
Shift + drag Add to existing selection
Alt/Opt + drag Subtract from selection
Spacebar while drawing Reposition as you drag
โจ๏ธShift adds. Alt/Option subtracts. These modifiers work the same way on every selection tool in Photoshop.
Selection Tool ยท L
Lasso Tools
โ๏ธ
Freehand Lasso
Hold and drag to draw any shape freely. Release to close the selection. Fast and loose โ great for rough initial selections you'll refine later.
๐ท
Polygonal Lasso
Click to place anchor points connected by straight lines. Perfect for buildings, signs, and anything with flat edges. Click the start point to close the selection.
๐งฒ
Magnetic Lasso
Trace near an edge and it snaps automatically by detecting contrast. Works best when the subject has a clear tonal separation from its background.
๐กBackspace/Delete while using the Polygonal or Magnetic Lasso removes the last anchor point placed.
Selection Tool ยท W
Quick Selection Tool
1
Press W and select Quick Selection from the toolbar
Adjust brush size with the bracket keys [ and ] โ larger for big open areas, smaller when working near edges.
2
Paint over the interior of the subject
You don't trace the edge โ paint broadly in the middle. Photoshop analyzes color, texture, and contrast to automatically find and hug the edges.
3
Shift-paint to add areas; Alt/Opt-paint to subtract
Fix overshoots and missed areas, then click "Select and Mask" in the Options Bar to refine the edges.
โกPaint in the middle โ let Photoshop find the edges. Quick Selection gets you 80% of the way there in seconds.

Best For
Solid or near-solid backgrounds โ a white studio backdrop, clear sky, or flat seamless. Click the background once, then invert (Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+I) to select the subject.

โ ๏ธ
Avoid When
The background is varied or the subject shares colors with it. For complex real-world scenes, Quick Selection or Select Subject will give far better results.
๐ฏTolerance controls how broadly it grabs similar colors. Default 32 is a solid starting point โ lower for precision, higher for a wider color range.
AI Selection ยท Start Here
Select Subject โ One Click
Select > Subject
Adobe's AI scans your entire image and selects the most prominent subject automatically. No dragging, no painting, no clicking. For portraits the result is often usable immediately. For everything else it's an excellent starting point to refine in Select and Mask.
๐ค
Portraits
Shockingly accurate โ often handles hair remarkably well on its own.
๐พ
Animals
Works well on defined subjects โ follow with Select and Mask for fur edges.
๐
Complex Scenes
Use as a starting point and refine โ still saves significant time.
๐คTry Select > Subject first on every cutout job. Reach for other tools only when the AI result needs improvement.

Select and Mask
1
Make any rough selection, then click "Select and Mask"
The button appears in the Options Bar whenever a selection tool is active. Or go to Select > Select and Mask. Your selection is shown as an overlay you can customize.
2
Use Refine Hair on hair, fur, and wispy edges
Paint along the hairline with a large brush โ Photoshop's AI separates individual strands from the background in real time. This is the headline feature.
3
Adjust Smart Radius, Feather, and Shift Edge
Smart Radius fine-tunes edge detection. Feather softens the edge for a natural blend. Shift Edge (negative) contracts the boundary to remove color fringing.
4
Output to Layer Mask โ never delete pixels
In the Output settings at the bottom, always choose "Layer Mask." This is non-destructive โ your original pixels are preserved and you can edit the mask anytime.
โ ๏ธDeleting pixels with a selection is permanent. Outputting to a Layer Mask is reversible. Always use the mask.
Modifier Keys
Adding and Subtracting
Works with every selection tool โ without exception
Shift + any tool
Add to the current selection. The cursor shows a small + sign.
Alt/Opt + any tool
Subtract from the current selection. The cursor shows a small โ sign.
Switch tools mid-selection. Start with Select Subject, then switch to the Lasso and Shift-draw to add a hand it missed. Then Alt-drag to remove a background area it grabbed. Selections accumulate across multiple tools and multiple moves โ no single tool has to do it all.
โจ๏ธLearn Shift (add) and Alt/Option (subtract) now. You'll use them in every Photoshop session for the rest of your life.
Advanced Technique
Saving Selections
1
Build the selection โ then go to Select > Save Selection
Give it a meaningful name like "Subject_Final." Photoshop stores it as an Alpha Channel โ a grayscale map where white = selected, black = not selected, gray = feathered edge.
2
Reload anytime via Select > Load Selection
Or Cmd/Ctrl-click the Alpha Channel thumbnail in the Channels panel to load it instantly. The marching ants reappear exactly as you saved them.
3
Save as PSD or TIFF โ not JPEG
JPEG does not support Alpha Channels โ they are silently discarded on save. Always save files with stored selections as PSD, TIFF, or PNG.
๐พSpent ten minutes on a complex selection? Saving it takes five seconds and can save you hours later. Do it.
Lesson Recap
Three Rules to Take With You
01
Start with Select Subject
Let the AI do the heavy lifting first. Only reach for manual tools when the result needs improvement.
02
Refine with Select and Mask
Fix hair, soften edges, remove fringing. Always output to a Layer Mask โ never delete pixels.
03
Shift / Alt to Add and Subtract
These two keys work with every selection tool. Switch tools mid-selection. Build complex selections incrementally.
๐ง That's the entire professional selection pipeline. When selections feel natural, the rest of Photoshop opens up completely.
Your Challenge
๐ฏ
Practice This Before Lesson 06
Open any portrait or photo with a clear subject. Run the full three-step pipeline.
๐ค Try Select > Subject โ evaluate the result
โ๏ธ Open Select and Mask โ run Refine Hair on any edges
๐ญ Output to Layer Mask โ check the edges on a solid color background
โ Use Shift + Lasso to add any area the AI missed
๐พ Save the selection as an Alpha Channel (Select > Save Selection)
Completed Select Subject + Select and Mask workflow
Practiced Shift (add) and Alt/Option (subtract) with at least two different tools
Saved a selection as an Alpha Channel and reloaded it

Layer Masks โ Non-Destructive Selections You Can Change Anytime
Deleting pixels is permanent. Masking is reversible. One haunts you. The other saves you. White reveals, black conceals โ and the X key makes all of it fast.
