Lightroom Classic โ Lesson 11
Your Camera Lied About the Color.
Every camera makes a guess about the color of the light โ and it's often wrong. White balance is how you correct it, control it, and use it creatively.
๐จWhite balance isn't just a correction tool. It's one of the most expressive controls in Lightroom โ and with RAW files, you have complete freedom to change it after the fact.
The Kelvin Scale
All Light Has a Color Temperature
The Kelvin Scale โ Low = Warm, High = Cool
1,800K Candle
3,200K Tungsten
5,000K Daylight
6,500K Overcast
8,000K Shade
10,000K Blue Sky
โ Warm / OrangeCool / Blue โ
๐ฏ๏ธ
Low Kelvin = Warm
Candles, tungsten bulbs, golden hour โ physically orange-warm light.
๐ฅ๏ธ
High Kelvin = Cool
Overcast sky, open shade, clear blue sky โ physically blue-cool light.
๐Counter-intuitive: to warm up a photo, drag Temperature right (higher K). The slider compensates for the light โ it doesn't match it.
The Two Sliders
Temperature & Tint
White balance lives on two axes. Master both and you can correct any color cast.
Temperature
+25
โ Cooler / BlueWarmer / Orange โ
Tint
0
โ GreenMagenta โ
๐ก๏ธTemperature first. Fix the orange/blue shift before touching anything else.
๐ฟTint to finish. Correct fluorescent green cast and fine-tune skin tones.
WB Presets
The 8 White Balance Presets
One-click starting points for common light sources. Try each one โ find the closest, then fine-tune.

The Eyedropper Tool
Click a Neutral โ Done.
Press W to activate the WB Eyedropper, then click anything that should be neutral gray or white.
W
Press W โ eyedropper activates
A 5ร5 pixel loupe follows your cursor, showing the exact pixel color and the WB values that would result from clicking there.
2
Click a neutral โ gray card, white wall, concrete
Avoid colored objects, specular highlights, and deep shadows. A true neutral has roughly equal R, G, and B values.
3
Lightroom sets Temperature and Tint instantly
Fine-tune with the sliders if needed โ especially for portraits, where pulling 5โ10K warmer than accurate is often more flattering.
๐ฏPro move: Photograph an 18% gray card as your first frame at every shoot. Eyedropper that one frame, then Sync WB to the whole session.
RAW vs JPEG
RAW = Full WB Freedom
๐ฅฉ
JPEG
WB is baked in when the camera processes the file. Like a cooked steak โ you can reheat it, but you can't uncook it. Limited correction range in post.
โ
๐ฅ
RAW
WB is stored as metadata only. The sensor data stays raw. Change WB in Lightroom from 3,200K to 9,000K with zero quality loss. Unlimited freedom.
๐With RAW, the WB you set in camera is just a preview suggestion โ not a commitment. You can change it completely in Lightroom without any penalty.
"As Shot" vs Override
Trust the Camera โ or Override It?
"As Shot" uses the WB your camera recorded. It's a starting point โ not a verdict.
โ
Stay "As Shot" when...
โข The colors look accurate to the scene
โข You used a manual WB in camera
โข You shot in clean natural daylight
๐
Override when...
โข Image looks clearly too warm or cool
โข Mixed lighting (tungsten + daylight)
โข You want a specific creative mood
๐ทCameras struggle most with mixed lighting โ Auto WB can shift inconsistently between frames. Don't feel obligated to defend the camera's guess.
Creative White Balance
Warm for Connection. Cool for Drama.
๐
Warm & Golden
Push Temperature to 6,500โ8,000K. Golden-hour glow, warmth, connection. Great for portraits, weddings, lifestyle.
๐
Cool & Cinematic
Pull Temperature to 3,500โ4,500K. Moody, tense, dramatic. Architecture, cityscapes, noir portraits, winter scenes.
๐จRule: Know what accurate looks like first โ then deviate deliberately. Intentional shifts look like vision. Accidental ones look like mistakes.
Library Module
Quick Develop WB in the Library
You don't always have to enter Develop. The Library module has a WB preset dropdown โ and it works on multiple selected photos at once.
QUICK DEVELOP โ Library Module
White Balance
As Shot โพ
Select multiple photos in Grid view โ change the WB dropdown โ all selected photos update instantly.
โกFast batch correction. Apply WB preset to 50 photos without entering Develop.
โ ๏ธLimitation: Presets only โ no Temperature/Tint slider access. Precise work needs Develop.
Sync Workflow
Sync WB Across an Entire Session
Perfect WB on one photo. Push it to hundreds in seconds.
1
In Develop โ perfect the WB on your reference/first-frame photo
Use the eyedropper on a gray card frame, or manually dial Temperature and Tint to accuracy.
2
In Library Grid (G) โ select all photos from the same lighting
Click the reference photo first (it becomes "most selected" โ lighter border). Then Shift+click or Cmd/Ctrl+A to add the rest.
3
In Develop โ click Sync โ check White Balance only โ Synchronize
All selected photos instantly receive the exact same Temperature and Tint. Shortcut: Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+S.
โก300 portraits from a two-hour session, all corrected to the same perfect WB. A 30-minute job becomes a 10-second operation.
Follow Along
WB Practice Checklist
Pause and run through these in Lightroom. Click each item as you complete it.
Open a RAW photo in Develop โ look at the current WB values (Temperature and Tint)
Click the WB dropdown and try each preset โ watch the photo change in real time
Press W and click the WB Eyedropper on a neutral gray or white area
Manually push Temperature to 7,500K โ notice the warm golden shift
Pull Temperature to 4,000K โ notice the cool cinematic shift
Select 5+ similar photos and practice the Sync WB workflow (Sync โ White Balance)
Lesson Recap
3 Things to Remember
1
Kelvin: Warm Low, Cool High
Temperature fixes orange/blue. Tint fixes green/magenta. Press W for the eyedropper โ click a neutral to correct in one shot.
2
RAW = Full Freedom
The WB you set in camera is just a preview. Change it completely in Lightroom โ zero quality loss, unlimited range.
3
Creative = Intentional
Know accurate first, then deviate deliberately. Warm = connection. Cool = drama. Sync WB to push your correction across an entire session instantly.
๐ง White balance is the fastest single edit to transform the mood of a photo โ and with RAW, it costs you nothing to experiment.

Exposure, Contrast & the Tone Panel
White balance corrects the color of light. The Tone Panel corrects the quantity of it. Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, and Blacks โ the six sliders that control every luminosity zone of your image, in the right order, every time.
