Lightroom Classic β€” Lesson 12
Six Sliders.
Total Control.
The Tone Panel in Lightroom's Develop module gives you six precision controls over the brightness of your photo β€” from the darkest blacks to the brightest whites.

Exposure
Master brightness dial. Moves the entire histogram β€” and every pixel β€” left (darker) or right (brighter) simultaneously.

Global Control
Affects every pixel in the image equally. The whole histogram moves left or right as you drag.

Calibrated in Stops
+1.00 = one stop brighter (same as opening aperture one stop). Range: βˆ’5 to +5. The same "stops" you use in camera.
⚠️ Reach for Exposure first β€” get overall brightness roughly right. Use the other five sliders to refine. Exposure is a starting point, not a finishing tool.

Contrast
Applies an S-curve in one move β€” pushes darks darker and lights lighter simultaneously. Adds punch to flat RAW files.
Contrast = 0
Flat line. No change to tonal relationships.
Contrast = +50
S-curve: darks deeper, lights brighter. More pop.
⚠️ Contrast is a blunt instrument β€” it affects both ends at once. A light touch (+10 to +30) is usually enough. Go too far and you clip highlights AND crush shadows simultaneously.

Highlights
Targets only the bright end of the tonal range. Pull it left (negative) to recover blown skies, window light, and overexposed surfaces.

Highlights Negative
Pull bright areas down. Recover sky texture and detail in overexposed regions. Try βˆ’50 to βˆ’100 on bright outdoor shots first.

Highlights Positive
Push bright areas even brighter. Used for high-key, ethereal styles. Watch for clipping β€” the histogram will tell you when you've gone too far.
πŸ’‘ RAW files contain hidden highlight data beyond what the preview shows. Even a blown-looking sky often has texture waiting to be recovered with Highlights at βˆ’100.

Shadows
Lifts the dark end of the tonal range without significantly affecting midtones or highlights. Open up faces in shade, dark foregrounds, and backlit subjects.

Shadows Positive
Lifts dark areas. Reveals texture in shadowed faces, clothing, and foregrounds. Try +30 to +70 on backlit subjects.

Shadows Negative
Deepens shadows for dramatic, moody looks. Common in noir, fine art, and dark portrait work where deep blacks are part of the aesthetic.
πŸ”Š Shadow recovery amplifies noise β€” especially at high ISO. After a heavy lift, check Detail β†’ Noise Reduction if the shadows look grainy.

Whites
Sets the ceiling of the tonal scale β€” where the brightest point in your image terminates. Different from Highlights: Whites defines the wall, Highlights adjusts the room below it.

Whites Positive
Pushes bright pixels toward 255 β€” maximizing the bright ceiling. Use Alt/Option while dragging to see clipping in real time. Stop just before important areas clip.

Whites Negative
Pulls the ceiling down β€” creating headroom so no highlights clip. Useful when you want to guarantee a clean, non-blown bright region regardless of downstream adjustments.
βœ… Hold Alt (Win) / Option (Mac) while dragging Whites. Canvas goes black. Glowing pixels are clipping. Stop when just specular reflections appear β€” then ease back slightly.

Blacks
Sets the floor of the tonal scale β€” the darkest point in your image. Drag left to deepen shadows and add richness. Drag right for a faded, matte look.

Blacks Negative
Pushes dark pixels toward pure black (0). Adds depth, richness, and definition. Use Alt/Option while dragging β€” canvas goes white when shadow areas are clipping.

Blacks Positive
Lifts the black point β€” no pure black in the image. Creates the faded, matte, film-inspired look common in lifestyle and editorial photography. Intentional, not broken.
βœ… Hold Alt (Win) / Option (Mac) while dragging Blacks. Canvas goes white. Dark areas that appear are crushing to pure black. Ease back when shadow detail starts disappearing.

🎯 Set the global brightness first (Exposure). Then lock the range endpoints (Whites, Blacks). Then refine the interior (Highlights, Shadows). In order, the sliders cooperate. Out of order, they fight.

Step 1: Adjust Exposure to get overall brightness in the ballpark
Step 2: Hold Alt/Option + drag Whites β€” set just below clipping point
Step 3: Hold Alt/Option + drag Blacks left β€” stop before shadow detail is lost
Step 4: Pull Highlights down if any bright areas need recovery

The HSL Panel:
Color by the Hue
Same precision as the Tone Panel β€” but for color. Target individual hue ranges (reds, blues, greens…) and shift their Hue, Saturation, and Luminance independently. Make a sky deeper without touching foliage.
