That dropdown at the top of your Layers panel that says "Normal"? Most photographers never touch it. It's one of Photoshop's most powerful tools.
๐๏ธ
Blend Modes
Change the blend mode and your layer stops just sitting on top of everything โ it starts interacting with everything below it. Shadows deepen. Lights glow. Textures melt into your photo. None of it is destructive.
๐The blend mode dropdown is in the top-left of the Layers panel. Every layer has one. Every layer starts at "Normal."
Core Concept
What Blend Modes Actually Do
Normal mode covers. Every other mode runs pixel math between layers.
๐ฅ
Normal
The layer sits on top and covers whatever is beneath it. Opacity controls transparency โ but no math is happening between layers.
โ
โจ
Any Other Mode
Photoshop runs a formula โ pixel by pixel โ comparing the layer above to the layers below. The result is a new color that neither layer contains on its own.
๐งฎEvery blend mode uses a different mathematical formula. The result changes automatically based on what's underneath.
Overview
Six Categories. Three You Need.
The blend mode dropdown has divider lines separating six groups. Know the group โ know the effect.

Normal

Darken โ
Darken, Multiply, Color Burn, Linear Burn
๐
Lighten โ
Lighten, Screen, Color Dodge, Linear Dodge
โก
Contrast โ

๐จ
Color
Hue, Saturation, Color, Luminosity
โญFocus on the starred three: Darken, Lighten, and Contrast. They cover 90% of real-world use.
Darken Group
Multiply Is the Workhorse
Darken, Multiply, Color Burn, Linear Burn โ all make the image darker. Multiply is the one you'll use constantly.
๐๏ธ
The Transparency Analogy
Imagine stacking two film transparencies on a light table. The combined image is always darker than either slide alone โ and that's exactly what Multiply does with pixel values. White in the Multiply layer? It becomes completely invisible.
โ๏ธ Multiply โ use for:
Darkening washed-out areas ยท Adding shadow depth ยท Logo/watermark on white backgrounds
๐ The key rule:
White = invisible in Multiply. Black = stays black. Everything in between = darkened proportionally.
โ๏ธMultiply: always darker than either layer. White disappears. Keyboard shortcut: Shift+Alt/Opt+M
Lighten Group
Screen Is the Opposite of Multiply
Lighten, Screen, Color Dodge, Linear Dodge โ all make the image lighter. Screen is what you reach for first.
๐ฝ๏ธ
The Projection Analogy
Instead of stacking transparencies, imagine projecting two slides onto the same screen simultaneously. The result is always brighter than either image alone โ and black in the Screen layer becomes completely invisible.
๐ฝ๏ธ Screen โ use for:
Fire & smoke on black ยท Light leaks ยท Glows ยท Lightening areas non-destructively
๐ The key rule:
Black = invisible in Screen. White = stays white. Everything in between = lightened proportionally.
๐ฝ๏ธScreen: always lighter than either layer. Black disappears. Keyboard shortcut: Shift+Alt/Opt+S
Contrast Group
Overlay: Multiply + Screen at Once
Overlay looks at the base layer. Where it's dark โ applies Multiply. Where it's light โ applies Screen. 50% gray becomes completely invisible.
โก
Overlay
Strong contrast boost. 50% gray = invisible. Best for textures.
๐ฅ๏ธ
Soft Light
Gentler version of Overlay. Great for portraits and subtle grading.
๐ช
Hard Light
Same math as Overlay but more aggressive. Use at reduced opacity.
The dodge & burn trick
Create a new layer โ fill with 50% gray โ set to Overlay โ it disappears. Now paint white to dodge (lighten), paint black to burn (darken). Non-destructive dodge and burn on demand.
โกOverlay: darks get darker, lights get lighter, 50% gray vanishes. Keyboard shortcut: Shift+Alt/Opt+O
Pro Shortcut
Never Scroll the Blend Mode Menu Again
Two keyboard shortcuts will change how you use blend modes forever.
Shift + +
Cycle forward through blend modes while watching the canvas change live
Shift + โ
Cycle backward through blend modes

Multiply in Practice
Logo on White? Paste + Multiply. Done.
No selection tools. No masking. One blend mode change and the white background disappears completely.
1
Open or paste your logo onto the photo as a new layer
White background and all โ don't bother removing it yet.
2
Change blend mode from Normal โ Multiply
The white rectangle vanishes. The black logo integrates with the photo.
3
Lower Opacity to 70โ80%
Makes the logo look intentional and professional rather than stamped on.
4
Position with the Move tool
No masking, no selections, no edge artifacts. That's it.
โ๏ธWhite background + Multiply = white vanishes. Works for any black graphic, watermark, or stamp on white.
Screen in Practice
Fire, Smoke & Light Effects
Anything shot on a black background โ set to Screen and the black disappears. Only the light remains.
๐ฅ
Fire & Smoke
Always photographed on black. Drop on your photo โ Screen โ black vanishes โ fire remains.
๐ก
Light Leaks
Retro light leak textures are designed for Screen or Linear Dodge. Instant analog warmth.
โจ
Glows & Sparkles
Bokeh overlays, fairy lights, star fields โ all on black. Screen makes the magic blend in.
๐
The Quick Rule
Black background โ Screen White background โ Multiply
๐ฝ๏ธScreen: always lighter. Black disappears. If it's on a black background, Screen is your answer. Every time.
Overlay in Practice
Adding Texture & Film Grain
Desaturate the texture โ set to Overlay โ reduce opacity. That's the entire workflow.
1
Place your texture above the photo layer
Paper, concrete, grain, grunge โ any texture image works.
2
Desaturate: Shift+Ctrl/Cmd+U
Removes color from the texture so it won't shift the hues in your photo.
3
Set blend mode to Overlay (or Soft Light)
Overlay = stronger. Soft Light = more subtle. Start with Soft Light for portraits.
4
Lower Opacity to 20โ40%
The texture blends naturally with your photo's own contrast. No masking needed.
๐บ๏ธWhy desaturate? Colored textures in Overlay mode shift your photo's colors. Gray textures only affect contrast and detail.
Color Group
Color Mode & Luminosity Mode
These two affect only part of the image's information โ and that's exactly the point.
๐จ
Color Mode
Applies hue + saturation from the blend layer, but keeps the brightness (luminosity) from the base unchanged. Use it to paint color onto a B&W photo โ the shading respects the original light and shadow.
+
๐ก
Luminosity Mode
Applies only brightness from the blend layer โ colors are untouched. Set your Curves adjustment layers to Luminosity to prevent color shifts when boosting contrast.
โญ The Luminosity Curves Trick
Add a Curves layer โ boost contrast โ notice the colors oversaturate? Change the Curves layer blend mode to Luminosity. Color shift disappears. Contrast stays. This is standard professional technique.
๐กSet Curves and Levels adjustment layers to Luminosity mode. It's one habit that will improve every edit you make.
Recap
Three Blend Modes. Unlimited Possibilities.
Start with these. Master these. The other 24 modes make sense once you understand the logic.

Bonus: Set Curves & Levels adjustment layers to Luminosity mode to prevent color shifts during contrast edits.
