Virtual Copies are one of Lightroom's most powerful and underused features. Multiple finished versions from a single RAW — no extra files, no wasted storage.

Color + B&W from One RAW
A fully finished color version and a fully finished B&W — both export-ready, both from the same file on disk.
✂️
Multiple Crops for Different Platforms
3:2 for print, 1:1 for Instagram, 16:9 for YouTube — each an independent crop, zero extra disk usage.

Client Options Side by Side
Warm, cool, natural, B&W — show clients four looks from one RAW. Export only what they choose.

Understanding the Concept
What a Virtual Copy Is
A Virtual Copy is a second (or third…) catalog record pointing to the same original file on disk.
Independent Develop settings
Each virtual copy has its own complete, independent set of Develop adjustments. Edit one without touching the other.
No duplicate file on disk
The original RAW is shared. A virtual copy occupies only a few kilobytes in the catalog — just the metadata record of a different set of edit instructions.
Appears as a separate thumbnail
In the grid and filmstrip, a virtual copy looks like its own image — a separate thumbnail with a small turned-page corner icon at the lower-left.
Three Ways to Do It
Creating a Virtual Copy
Virtual copies can be created three ways — all produce the same result:
A
Right-click any image → Create Virtual Copy
Works in both Library grid and Develop filmstrip. The most discoverable method.
B
Photo menu → Create Virtual Copy
Menu bar option — same result.
C
Cmd / Ctrl + Apostrophe (')
The fastest method once you know it. One keystroke creates the copy instantly.
The copy appears immediately next to the original in the filmstrip and grid. It starts with the same settings as the original at the moment of creation. Edit the copy independently — the original is never affected.
Recognizing Them in the Catalog
Identifying Virtual Copies
Virtual copies have several visual and metadata indicators that distinguish them from originals.
Folded-page icon
A small turned-page icon appears in the lower-left corner of the thumbnail in both grid and filmstrip views.
Copy Name in Metadata panel
The Metadata panel in Library shows "Copy 1", "Copy 2", etc. in the Copy Name field. This field is editable.
Rename for clarity
Edit the Copy Name in Library module to something meaningful: "B&W Version", "Square Crop", "Warm Grade". Clear names make large collections manageable.
The Classic Use Case
Color + B&W — The Classic Workflow
The most common virtual copy workflow: two independently finished versions from one RAW, near-zero extra storage.
1
Edit the original to your finished color version
Complete all color grading, tone, and finishing on the primary image.
2
Create a Virtual Copy (Cmd / Ctrl + ')
The copy inherits all your color settings as a starting point.
3
On the copy: press V to convert to B&W
V is the keyboard shortcut for Black & White conversion in Develop.
4
Fine-tune the B&W conversion independently
Use the B&W panel luminance sliders to dial in the tonal relationships. The original color version is untouched.
5
Export both independently
Select each and export with the appropriate settings. Two deliverables. One RAW. Near-zero extra storage.
Platform-Ready Output
Multiple Crops for Multiple Platforms
One landscape image, multiple virtual copy crops — each completely independent, each export-ready for a different platform.
Change one crop without affecting any other. Export each with the appropriate resolution, color space, and filename settings.
Professional Delivery
Client Proofing — Multiple Looks
Virtual copies are ideal for presenting multiple creative directions to a client without delivering — or storing — multiple files.
1
Create 3–4 virtual copies with different color treatments
Natural, warm, cool, B&W — each a fully developed, independent version.
2
Put all copies and original in a collection
A collection gathers all versions for easy management and sharing.
3
Share as a client gallery proof — client selects preferred version
Export the collection as a gallery or send low-res proofs. The client picks their look.
4
Export only the chosen look — delete or keep the rest
Un-chosen copies cost nothing to keep and nothing to delete. Your call.
Organizing Your Work
Virtual Copies in Collections
Virtual copies are full citizens of the catalog — they can live in collections independently of their originals.
Separate collection membership
A virtual copy can live in a "B&W Portfolio" collection while the original lives in a "Color Portfolio" collection — even though both reference the same file on disk.
Fully valid for export and sharing
Collections containing virtual copies export exactly like any other collection. The fact that a copy shares a file on disk is invisible to the export engine.
Smart Collections work with copies too
Smart Collections can target virtual copies using metadata rules — useful for automatically gathering all B&W copies, or all copies with a specific star rating.
Changing Which Version Is Primary
Promote a Copy to Master
If you decide a virtual copy's edit is actually better than the original's, you can swap which one is the "master."
1
Right-click the virtual copy → Set Copy as Master
The copy's Develop settings become the primary (master) record.
2
The old master becomes a virtual copy
No settings are lost — the roles simply swap. Both versions are preserved.
Useful when you realize the alternative version is actually the keeper. Promotes it to primary status without losing the original edit.
Important: The file on disk never changes — only which catalog record is considered "primary." The RAW data is always the same.
Your Turn
Challenge + Recap
3-Part Challenge:
Edit one image to a finished color version, then create a virtual copy and convert it to B&W (press V). Fine-tune the B&W independently. Export both.
Create three virtual copies of one landscape: crop each to 3:2, 1:1, and 16:9. Name each copy descriptively.
In the Library module, rename all three copies in the Copy Name metadata field so you can identify them at a glance.
No Extra Disk Space
All copies share the original RAW. Only a few KB of catalog metadata per copy.
Folded Corner Icon
The small page-turn icon in the thumbnail lower-left identifies a virtual copy at a glance.
Cmd + Apostrophe
The fastest way to create a virtual copy. One keystroke, instant result.
Color + B&W
The classic use case. Two fully independent finished versions. One RAW. Near-zero storage cost.
Multiple Crops
One image, every aspect ratio. Each crop independent, each export-ready for its platform.
Promote to Master
Right-click → Set Copy as Master if the alternate version is the real keeper.
